Pilot Traffic Calming on Groveland’s Main Street

NOTE THAT IMPLEMENTATION HAS BEEN DELAYED DUE TO A CONTRACTOR’S EQUIPMENT MALFUNCTION (October 5, 2025) AND WEATHER (October 9, 2025). Rescheduled work is pending scheduling approval from MassDOT.

The Town of Groveland, in collaboration with the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC), is piloting traffic calming measures along Main Street (Route 113) near the Pines Recreation Area and the municipal complex. This location was selected due to higher levels of pedestrian activity and turns into/from the sites’ driveways.

The pilot includes thermoplastic line striping and vertical tubular markers (also known as flexiposts or delineators). These vertical markers create a visual narrowing of the roadway, which has been shown in some contexts to reduce 85th percentile speeds—the speed at or below which 85% of vehicles travel. MVPC, Groveland, and MassDOT (which maintains Route 113) will evaluate whether these treatments are effective along Main Street.

The thermoplastic markings are permanent, while the tubular markers will be removed in mid-November to accommodate winter road operations.

Speed Conditions at This Location

The posted speed limit on this segment of Main Street is 35 miles per hour. A recent weekday speed study using an automatic traffic recorder found:

  • 85th percentile weekday speed: approximately 40 mph
  • Average weekday speed: 37.5 mph

Both measures exceed the posted speed limit.

We Want Your Feedback

Please use this link to share your thoughts on the pilot. MVPC will compile all input into a post-assessment report for the Town of Groveland and MassDOT. To help ensure a representative sample of community feedback, we kindly ask that each person submit only one comment.
