Data & Maps

To eliminate injury crashes, we need to know where they have happened and where they are likely to happen. To do this we have created the High Injury Network map.

The HIN assigns a severity to road segments and intersections based on the following criteria:

  1. Severity of injuries resulting from crashes
  2. Crashes involving non-motorists (i.e., people walking and biking)
  3. Crashes occurring in Regional Environmental Justice Communities (REJ+).

The interactive HIN map below highlights locations with identified safety concerns based on historical crash data from the MassDOT IMPACT portal for 2017-2022.

The map opens showing a heatmap of severe and fatal injuries to show locations with crashes with a severe outcome. As you zoom in, the trends-based high injury network (HIN) becomes visible.

*Please note that the Trends-Based HIN includes road segments and intersections with a severity above average and therefore does not account for all crashes in the region.*
