COVID-19: Be Sure to Check Outdoor Recreation Guidelines

See all News

Spending time in nature has become an imperative way to stay mentally and physically well in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. When practicing social distancing, walks and outdoor activities can be an effective way to cope with the additional stress of these challenging times.

For those who would like to try their hand at a little photography, Essex National Heritage Area has officially opened the 2020 Essex Heritage Photo Contest. The contest welcomes submissions in four categories, including Heritage at Home, which invites participants to document how they are coping with the challenges of COVID-19. MVPC supports this photo contest every year and is thrilled that Essex Heritage has decided to move forward with it in 2020.

While more people are turning to the outside to stay healthy and happy it is more important than ever to check in with your local guidelines and land use advisories to ensure proper use of recreation areas for everyone.

To support the stay at home advisory and the welfare of Massachusetts residents, organizations such as Mass Audubon, and The Trustees have made the difficult decision to close their properties and trails. Others, such as Essex County Greenbelt are still allowing visitors with guidelines on safe practices and social distancing in the outdoors. Be sure to check out community and organization websites for more information. Let’s get creative in how we enjoy our time outside while maintaining safe practices for all.

**UPDATE as of April 9, 2020** – The Trustees have reopened 76 properties with the intent for local visitation only. The Trustees notice and guidelines for property use can be found here.
