Vision Zero Coming to the Merrimack Valley

See all News

Transportation is a basic need. MVPC is committed to ensuring a safe and reliable transportation network so roadway users can move comfortably throughout the region. Early last Spring, we were awarded a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning Grant with sister region NMCOG. As part of this award, we will develop a High-Injury Network (HIN); a map that depicts locations where trends and roadway characteristics suggest a higher likelihood of severe and fatal crash outcomes.

MV Vision Zero Plan

Insight from the High Injury Network will be woven with public input and participation to support the creation of a Vision Zero Plan. This plan is a roadmap to achieve zero roadway deaths and injuries in the Merrimack Valley. The introduction of a Vision Zero Plan is crucial to protect our region’s community. Between 2017 and mid-2023, there were 125 deaths and over 750 severe injuries on Merrimack Valley roads.

How to Get Involved

Public participation in the Vision Zero Plan is essential as it helps reflect the diversity of lived experiences which we encounter on roadways and passages in the region. MVPC is looking for individuals to get in touch if they…

  • Are enthusiastic about improving roadway safety through a safe systems approach.
  • Can recognize and balance both local and regional safety needs.
  • Can maintain a constructive working relationship with multiple stakeholders.
  • Are open to feedback, receptive to change and like to promote collaboration.
  • Can commit to at least four Vision Zero Planning Team meetings and one additional meeting or event.
  • Can support informal engagement efforts in your community.

Next Event

Come say “hi” to us at Ciclovia in Lawrence this Sunday, September 10th between 2pm and 6pm. We will have maps to collect insight from participants to identify areas of concern for roadway users in the region.
