In June, the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment held their 2023 Visionary Award Ceremony. The Gulf of Maine Council is an international collaboration first created in 1989 by the governments of Maine, Massachusetts, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, and Nova Scotia. The goal of this group is to promote environmental health and the well-being of communities across the Gulf of Maine (GOM). Each year, the Council recognizes individuals, groups, and organizations that are working to promote this goal through the protection, enhancement, and restoration the GOM ecosystem.

This year, our very own Peter Phippen was recognized with a Massachusetts Visionary Award for his significant contributions in this field. For over 20 years, Peter has dedicated his life to the protection of this invaluable ecosystem through collaborative and innovative policy, restoration, education, monitoring, and planning. In his role as the Massbays Upper North Shore Regional Coordinator and MVPC’s Coastal Resource Specialist, Peter has been instrumental in achieving and maintaining the Great Marsh’s ACEC designation, pursuing and attaining substantial and sustained federal funding for resiliency-based ecosystem management, and developing and managing numerous successful partnerships across the region. Beyond Peter’s tangible successes, his unique ability to transcend barriers has poised him as a leader in piloting emergent methods, building dynamic collaborations, and bringing a diversity of expertise together under the common goal of protecting the Great Marsh. Above all, Peter brings passion, humor, and fun into his work. His dedication to our natural world is evident in everything he does, and contagious in his interactions with others. Through his ardent support of emerging professionals, Peter has inspired others to spend a day in the field, raising the next generation of Great Marsh advocates.

We are excited to celebrate this award with Peter and grateful to have his energy and dedication on our team. Congratulations, Peter!
