Support for Regional Trails and Active Transportation

See all News
In the past decade, the Merrimack Valley region has made important investments into our regional trails network. The construction of shared-use paths throughout the region provides opportunities for people to recreate and choose an active form of transportation to get to their destinations.

MVPC Transportation Program Manager Patrick Reed and Field Specialist Danny Ovalle took a fantastic tour of the Salisbury leg of the Coastal Trails Network on Friday, March 17th led by Jerry Klima of the Coastal Trails Coalition, shown here with Patrick and Danny.

It is thanks to the support of advocates like Jerry Klima that communities such as Salisbury, Amesbury, Newbury, West Newbury and Newburyport have all advanced components of the regional trails network. Click here to see a map of trails the Coastal Trails Coalition has helped realize!

Another MVPC regional partner, the Essex Heritage Commission, has spearheaded the development of the Boarder to Boston Trail that is part of a national trail network from Maine to Florida called the East Coast Greenway. Jerry Klima —also a Commissioner at Essex Heritage—has advocated for the Salisbury section of the Border to Boston Trail. MVPC transportation staff have worked with Jerry and members of the Merrimack Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (MVMPO) to fund these important sections of the Border to Boston trail. “Jerry and other advocates have been paramount for our region’s active transportation,” stated Patrick Reed of MVPC’s transportation team. “The region has been fortunate to enjoy strong support for trails, and we’re excited to continue building momentum for safer, comfortable non-motorist facilities.”
