On September 19th, the City of Lawrence once again opened Essex and Common Streets to cyclists, walkers, wheelchairs, and more for Ciclovía. Families spent the afternoon enjoying a beautiful day, participating in Zumba, watching performances, learning bicycle skills, and generally being physically active.
The term Ciclovía means cycleway and was coined in Colombia to mean open streets. The event is hosted annually (except in 2020 during the height of the pandemic) by Lawrence’s Mayor’s Health Task Force and supported by a host of partners. New this year, Creative Collaborative participated, putting on a performance with local youth. They have created a website with photos from the event that can be found here.
Ciclovía helps bring awareness to multi-modal and pedestrian-friendly modes of transportation in the Merrimack Valley, the need for which is only increasing. For more information on the multi-modal initiatives supported by MVPC, check out our Transportation program.
