The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC), in collaboration with the Merrimack River Watershed Council (MRWC), Groundwork Lawrence (GWL), and the Cities of Methuen and Lawrence, are excited to share an opportunity for the public to learn about ongoing efforts to revitalize the Spicket River. Whether you live within the watershed, exercise along its banks, or simply appreciate it as you drive by, the Spicket River is an important natural resource in our region’s urban corridor.
During the industrial revolution, the Spicket River experienced substantial degradation due to limited regulations on illicit discharges, which continued to progress as the watershed became increasingly impervious. Noting the intrinsic and economic value of the river, the Cities of Lawrence and Methuen have since been working with local and regional partners to revitalize its beauty and functionality, while simultaneously protecting surrounding residents from threats including inland flooding and pollution.
Most recently, the Cities have worked with MVPC, MRWC, and GWL to develop a State approved Watershed Based Plan. This plan comprehensively reviews the river’s degradation, and proposes the best solutions to improve water quality, reduce flooding, and increase overall health of the watershed. This plan is a prerequisite to pursue implementation funds for proposed projects. Now, we invite the public to learn about ongoing efforts to revitalize the Spicket River by reviewing and commenting on the contents of the plan. To hear public input, two public meetings will be head in Methuen and Lawrence. Please view below for details on meeting times and locations or view the related fliers for Lawrence and Methuen. We look forward to seeing you then!
