As we consider our contribution for Earth Day 2021, it is difficult to overlook how much we needed our open spaces this past year. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us in the Merrimack Valley have found piece-of-mind in the outdoors. We have found new places to walk, hike, bike, and paddle. This Earth Day, we hope Merrimack Valley residents will find a way to honor those special places that have helped us weather more than a year of restrictions and time away from friends and family. Consider it a way to give back to these places.
Our local land trusts, nature centers, and watershed association have found ways to keep their programs going and properties accessible despite restrictions. Our beaches, bike paths, and community conservation lands have provided us with much-needed recreational space. With more of us outdoors than ever, however, it is just as important to be good stewards of our recreation spaces and learn to take care of them so they can support the increased use.
As spring begins and another Earth Day approaches, let’s consider supporting and restoring the places we value most. From our own neighborhoods to our favorite trails, PPE and other trash items are emerging from the snow and leaves. While large Earth Day cleanups are not likely to happen this year, we can still safely gather trash or donate to an organization supporting land, water, or habitat conservation. Take this Earth Day as an opportunity to engage with our planet and learn to be a better steward. We only get the one! Each of us can make small contributions that add up to a much bigger impact.
