Merrimack Valley’s Frances Cole Lee

See all News

In celebration of Black History Month MVPC recognizes and celebrates the Haverhill poet Frances Cole Lee. She began studying poetry right here in the Merrimack Valley and went on to publish many influential poems which can be found in her book, Opal Dust.

Frances Cole Lee’s beautiful piece about the forests and the ocean remind us of the importance of our region’s natural resources. You can find her book of poetry, Opal Dust, at the Haverhill Public Library.

Celebrations of our natural resources were highlighted most recently during our cultural planning project, Place and Meaning 2020. During the course of the project we asked residents of the Merrimack Valley what places, spaces, and events they value in the region. Not surprisingly people highlighted parks, forests, the river, and the ocean as crucial assets.
