Global Positioning System (GPS) Data Collection
Phones have it. Cars have it. Nowadays, many vehicles and personal electronic devices come with a Global Positioning System (GPS) system that allow you to track and navigate your location. GPS is ideal for geo-referencing field data because it’s capable of positional accuracies within inches.
MVPCs GIS program provides GPS data-collection services utilizing Trimble GPS technology. Data is either keyed directly into a computer, collected by scanning a bar code, or by digital calipers, laser range and GPS receivers.
GPS in Motion
Our GPS support comes in a variety of forms. Take a look at some of the ways MVPC helps our communities using the latest technology, integrating GPS data with GIS:
Municipal Infrastructure
MVPC conducts GPS data collection to assist with municipal asset management, such as pavement & sidewalk condition, water & sewer infrastructure and signage.
Stormwater
We help communities meet Phase II Stormwater requirements by using GPS to collect stormwater infrastructure, such as storm drains and stormwater outfall pipes, all of which are easily inventoried and mapped using GPS.
Street Lights
A GPS/GIS based inventory of streetlights provides a systematic mechanism to better manage and track their operation and maintenance. MVPC conducts community-wide streetlight inventories to collect locational information, wattage and condition.
Business Locations
In support of Merrimack Valley Means Business (MVMB.biz), MVPC GIS staff uses GPS to conduct an inventory of all existing businesses and properties available for sale or lease. This inventory is then maintained in a comprehensive searchable database.
Trails
MVPC works closely with communities and trail committees in the region to collect and maintain a regional trails network. Acquisition of trail data is accomplished using GPS both by MVPC staff and GPS collection volunteers.
