Newbury is a semi-rural town with strong historical ties to shell fishing and agriculture. With almost 25 square miles of land, the Town of Newbury has three distinct sections: Old Town, Byfield Village, and Plum Island. Newbury has emerged as a classic New England bedroom community, with a limited amount of commercial and industrial development, a growing home-based business sector, a still sizeable agricultural presence, and an impressive collection of colonial era structures, including the 1654 Tristram Coffin House.
The town is also blessed with abundant natural beauty. Plum Island offers miles of public sandy beaches and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, which offers recreational and educational adventures such as wildlife observation, hunting, fishing, and shell fishing on 4,600-plus acres. The refuge supports varied and abundant populations of resident and migratory wildlife including more than 300 species of birds and additional species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and plants.
